Graham's Beard Shave for Melanoma Research

Story

Hi there,
I’ve created this fundraising page to help Melanoma Institute Australia reach zero deaths from melanoma.
Australia has the highest rates of melanoma in the world. Melanoma is the most common cancer affecting 20 to 39-year-old Australians and one Australian is diagnosed with the disease every 30 minutes. It is estimated 1300 Australians will die from melanoma this year.

I have personally been touched by this insipid invader! November 2012 I had a Level 4 Malignant Melanoma removed from my central upper back. There were no usual signs like itchy or bleeding, it was just an aggressive invader! I had a feeling something wasn't right, so I asked my wife Kym to have a squiz. I saw the GP within a few days & was referred to Dr Hannes Gebauer who quickly whipped the growth out. Upon reflection, I worked out that "the feeling" I had was on my Mother's birthday. She wasn't as fortunate & passed away in 1996 from a missed Melanoma. I'm sure she was watching over me & didn't want the same to happen to me! Since then I've had a couple more benign invaders removed, while still having my Annual visits with Hannes I do walk in apprehensive every time!

As you can see with the photo, my good looks are currently being hidden. I am happy to sacrifice the Beard & Long Hair at the Back to raise funds for Melanoma research! I've a few pokers in the fire for the planned Big Shave Day, but we are looking to have the Beard Shave Off day on Sunday 27th March at the Secret Harbour Surf Club. This shall coincide with the last day of Nippers & the Last Patrol for the Season. More than happy for people to attend the activity. Finer details to be confirmed & communicated! I would be honoured for as much support on the day, I've grown quite attached to the Beard!

Update to the above, I had my annual visit with Dr Hannes on 04th April 2022. He removed another Basal Cell Cacinoma (BCC) from my Neck/Throat and a further Dysplastic Junctional Naevus from my shoulder. Both of these came back fine, however I am to still be vigilant & protect my skin going forward.

With your help, the funds we raise will support MIA’s world-class research, treatment, and education programs to save lives from melanoma.
